Sacristans assist the priests and other ministers in preparing for Mass, arriving approximately 60 minutes beforehand to ready the altar and sanctuary.

Before Mass, the Sacristan prepares the liturgical books, sacred vessels, and the bread and wine that will be consecrated. The Vestry and Sacristy areas are arranged so that all necessary items for the celebration of Mass are properly organized and ready for use.

After Mass, the Sacristan returns the sacred vessels and other liturgical articles to their proper places.

At St. Joseph, Sacristans generally serve at consistent weekend or weekday Mass times throughout the year, depending on their availability.

As part of the Church’s nationwide safeguarding policies, Sacristans complete a background screening every five years to help ensure a safe environment for all.
